WAS has hit hard and I have more wood than I can use in five years. I'm sure no one else here has the same problem. 
I have the wood nicely stacked. I was looking at the wood yesterday and I noticed a redwood set with some checking. Should I put some treatment on the end grain? Are some woods more prone to this while some woods not need any treatment? |

Steve, unless you trim back beyond all end checks to fresh wood sealing at this point won't stop'em. It will help prevent new checks from starting, but if you have no extra trim room CA the checks to stop'em than end seal. As Michael said paraffin if you got it handy, emulsified wax (Anchor Seal) or latex paint...heavy on the paint. Edit after thought: You can use CA glue to seal with but, I'm so cheap I never think of it except with some ebony boards and snakewood pieces. |

Checking on the ends is normal if it is not sealed, but just for green wood. Wood that has been properly dried to 8 - 10% shouldn't do this. Is it happening with wood from different suppliers or maybe just the redwood was on the green side? Stickering the wood is normally all you need to do. |

Shellac is a great sealer and I brush it on all the cut amboyna burl turning blocks, but it won't stop end checks that are present from expanding. You'll need to trim them off to be safe or super glue them anyway. Paraffin and wax can migrate into softwood and discolor it sometimes. I've seen it happen on soft hardwoods like alder also |
